چکیده

Objective The objective was to study the performance of an in-house developed wall shear stress (WSS) algorithm using PC-MRI in intracranial aneurysms. Materials & Methods First, the algorithm was applied to a high resolution in vitro PC-MRI measurement under steady and pulsatile fl ow conditions. A CFD simulation was performed with similar infl ow boundary conditions. Second, WSS was estimated in steady PC-MRI data acquired at different resolutions. Third, the algorithm was applied to a pulsatile in vivo measurement and compared with CFD. The direction and magnitude of WSS vectors were computed and compared with Spearman’s correlation coeffi cient. Results Quantitative agreement was moderate for the phantom (Spearman ρ=0.69). The WSS magnitude of PC-MRI was lower than CFD for both the in vitro and in vivo case. However, there was qualitative agreement between PC-MRI and CFD, i.e. WSS vector direction was similar for both modalities. chapter 8 153 Wall shear stress Circular WSS patterns were found both in vitro and in vivo for PC-MRI and CFD. Increasing resolution uncovered complex WSS patterns with higher mean WSS magnitude. Conclusion The algorithm can robustly estimate wall shear stress patterns in aneurysm geometries with similar directions as CFD. PC-MRI based estimation of abnormal WSS patterns may aid in the identifi cation of risk factors for aneurysm disease progression. 154 Wall shear stress in an in vitro and in vivo intracranial aneurysm estimated with phase contrast MRI 8.

Wall shear stress vectors derived from 3D PC-MRI at increasing resolutions in an intracranial aneurysm phantom

Background Wall shear stress (WSS) is the friction force that blood flow exerts on the vessel wall. It is thought to affect the function of endothelial cells and the development of atherosclerosis and aneurysms. A promising technique to measure blood flow is three-dimensional phase contrast MRI (3D PC-MRI). Due to limited spatial resolution and SNR, estimating WSS from time-resolved 3D PC-MRI i...

Thinner Regions of Intracranial Aneurysm Wall Correlate with Regions of Higher Wall Shear Stress: A 7T MRI Study.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Both hemodynamics and aneurysm wall thickness are important parameters in aneurysm pathophysiology. Our aim was to develop a method for semi-quantitative wall thickness assessment on in vivo 7T MR images of intracranial aneurysms for studying the relation between apparent aneurysm wall thickness and wall shear stress. MATERIALS AND METHODS Wall thickness was analyzed in...

A patient-specific study of blood flow in a cerebral aneurysm using medical images

Background: Cerebral aneurysm disease causes intracranial hemorrhage by rupturing, which can eventually, lead to organ failure or death. For this reason, it is important to anticipate the reasons for rupturing of a cerebral aneurysm from biomechanical point of view. Investigating this disease may even help the physicians to find treatments and predict the patient’s situation. This research was ...

In vitro and in vivo comparison of three MR measurement methods for calculating vascular shear stress in the internal carotid artery.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Vascular abnormalities, such as atherosclerosis and the growth and rupture of cerebral aneurysms, result from a derangement in tissue metabolism and injury that are, in part, regulated by hemodynamic stress. The purpose of this study was to establish the feasibility and accuracy of determining wall shear rate in the internal carotid artery from phase-contrast MR data. M...

In vitro measurement of fluid-induced wall shear stress in unruptured cerebral aneurysms harboring blebs.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Little attention has been focused on the role of fluid-induced wall shear stress in fully developed cerebral aneurysms. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the alternation and distribution of wall shear stress over 1 cardiac cycle in patients' aneurysms. METHODS A middle cerebral artery aneurysm and a basilar tip aneurysm with localized outpouching (blebs) in their...
